We will be reading Ishmael over the next two weeks.  You will need a note book to jot down ideas or questions and a copy of your book in class each day.  We will follow the Socratic approach in Ishmael to discuss the book in class.  We will take turns doing some reading aloud in class and you will do most of the reading at home as homework.  In order for our Socratic Seminars to work, you must keep up with the reading assignments.

Procedure:

  1. We will sit in a big circle each day and read and discuss the book. Everyone should share his/her thoughts in the discussion. the only rules for the discussion are:

    1.    Raise your hand before your speak

    2.   Give the speaker your full attention

    3.   Everyone's opinion is valid, no put downs

  2. Each day you will write a one paragraph reaction to the reading and discussion that will be due the next day.

  3. Take careful notes on both Leaver and Taker culture so that you understand them well

Final Project:

To demonstrate your understanding of the differences between Leavers and Takers you will design a presentation for the class.  This can be in any form you wish.  Some ideas might include a PowerPoint presentation, a video, a poster, paintings, a photo essay, a graphic essay - anything your creative minds can devise.
