The Scavenger Hunt

The Flow Activity

1. Vietnam Scavenger Hunt

Students will work in pairs to create an internet scavenger hunt over their assigned topic.  Using the search engine of your choice, find sites that deal with your topic.  From these sites come up with 10 good questions that other students could answer by going to these sites.  Then come up with one good comprehensive essay question based on information in these web sites.

Your finished scavenger hunt sheet should have a title, and introduction, ten questions, essay question, and list of sources.

  Topics for Scavenger Hunts:

  2. History of Vietnam from beginning to 1945
  3. History of Vietnam from 1945 – 1954
  4. History of Vietnam from 1954 – 1965
  5. History of Vietnam from 1965 – 1975

2.  Vietnam Flow

Flow Activity for Vietnam Unit

A Flow activity gets its name because students "flow" from one activity station to the other, finishing each activity as he/she goes along. There are four stations in this Flow. The first station is the online discussion activity that we will all do together in the computer lab. The Fourth is the Scavenger Hunt which we will also do in the computer lab. The others will be done in the classroom or in the Journalism Lab.

Station 1: Online discussion activity.     If you read If I Die In a Combat Zone, you will access the activity by clicking on the soldier image and then choose three of the questions to respond to. If you read Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam, you will access the activity by clicking on the hand frenade and then choose three of the questions to respond to.  Go to the Bulletin Board on the nonfiction page  and read directions for posting responses on the bulletin board under the "If I Die in a Combat Zone" Thread.

Station 2: Look through and read some of the entries in Hunger in the Heart and Shrapnel in my Heart. It has become very common for people to leave artifacts at the graves or sites of death of loved ones. What would you leave as a memento to a loved one, either at the memorial or at their grave? Make this a complete paragraph.

Then Choose either 3 or 4

Station 3:  Go to the CD player and listen to the music in the order they are numbered.  Then write a brief essay explaining how the attitude toward the Vietnam war changed as illustrated through the music of the era.

Station 4: Go to http://www.pschulze.com/vietnam.htm and choose one of the scavenger hunts. Go on the hunt and type up the questions, your answers, and the URLs of the website on which you found the answers.

Then Choose either 5 or 6

Station 5: Go to Scavenger Hunts and follow directions for creating a scavenger hunt.

Station 6: Go to the CD player or online and listen to music of the Vietnam war era. Choose three songs which you think illustrate the attitude toward the war at the beginning, toward the middle, and toward the end of the American involvement in Vietnam.  Create a Powerpoint using lyrics, music if possible, and pictures to present your choices.
