  Annie and Amanda: Hello

Guy: Hello

Annie and Amanda: Hello, ok this is Guy Stone

Guy: So what are you guys doing today?

Annie and Amanda: We are interviewing you!

Guy: Ok good

Annie and Amanda: Was it exciting to know that you could have been in the Vietnam War?

Guy: Well, it was probably more stressful then is was exciting

Annie and Amanda: How old here you when you enlisted?

Guy: Well I didn’t enlist; I registered for the draft when I was 18

Annie and Amanda: 18?

Guy: and at that time there was a lottery system in place, each country had to sign a number of recruits, so you signed up that corresponding to a day of the years. They started with people with the lowest lottery number and went on up to their quota they had to fill. So, I was in school at the time, and my number was 217 and they filled their quota at about 211.

Annie and Amanda: WOW!

Guy: So, I didn’t get drafted

Annie and Amanda: Were you scared that your card could have been pulled or were you proud?

Guy: Well I was concerned about it, at that time there was a lot of bad publicity about the war in Vietnam by the time I was 18 and it was beginning to look like we were not going to be successful over there by that time.

Annie and Amanda: Ok, umm, how did you parents react to the fact that you were so close to being drafted.

Guy: I think my parents were relieved that I wasn’t drafted, I think by then they had realized the country wasn’t going to do the things necessary to win over there, so they probably didn’t think it was worth while to go over there.

Annie and Amanda: Were any of your brothers signed up too? Did they sign up?

Guy: No, they didn’t get drafted or enlisted, but every one has to sign up, even now.

Annie and Amanda: hahahaha Peggy Jo Weber, how did you feel about leaving her? Did you even know her?

Guy: haha I didn’t know Peggy until after that point.

Annie and Amanda: OK are you proud to be an American who could have fought to be free?

Guy: Yes, yes I am…hahaha

Annie and Amanda: How do you think your life would have changed if you would have fought and lived?

Guy: Most people probably had a period of readjustment that would have prevented them from going on like before.

Annie and Amanda: Were any of your friends drawn up?

Guy: Yes

Annie and Amanda: Was it tough?

Guy: Yes, it was very tough and dangerous, but I was young and had a lot of stuff going on so I didn’t really miss them that much, but it was really tough on them, it was really dangerous there.

Annie and Amanda: Did you want your card to get drawn?

Guy: No, I didn’t

Annie and Amanda: How did Wall react to their young men going off to war?

Guy: I think Wall was very patriotic, they got yellow ribbons like we do and we very patriotic towards their young soldiers.

Annie and Amanda: What were your thoughts about starting a family at this time?

Guy: I wasn’t really thinking about it much at this time.

Annie and Amanda: Did you read about the war in the news and stuff? Did you keep with the events?

Guy: Yes

Annie and Amanda: Did it scare you?

Guy: Well, I don’t think scared was the right word, but it worried me

Annie and Amanda: Did you think it was fair to have to sign up at your age?

Guy: Yes, I thought it was fair

Annie and Amanda: What did you want to be when you grew up and how did it interfere with your plans?

Guy: Well, it didn’t interfere with my plans, but I guess I wanted to be lawyer.

Annie and Amanda: Were you a hippie?

Guy: Well I had long hair at the time

Annie and Amanda: Did you ever think a war could affect Wall S.D.?

Guy: Yes, I did because there were people dying and there were people from Wall dying.

Annie and Amanda: Are you happy that you didn’t have to go to war or would you have liked to experience it?

Guy: Well I’m happy that I didn’t have to go, but if I was young now I would be interested in going to Iraq.

Annie and Amanda: Why would you want to go to the war now?

Guy: Because I believe more in what we are doing now and what we were doing then, and it is a more worthy cause for America.

Annie and Amanda: Well thank you for your time

Guy: Your welcome
