Short Story

The Magic Lamp

By Drew

It was the weirdest, but best, day of my life. Filled with so many weird things, a bottle, and a genie. My name is Brady Anderson and the day of July 15, 1987 changed my life forever.

On the 14th, I woke up at about 11:15, and got a call from my friend Kellen. He was my best friend and he wanted to hang out, so I grabbed a quick brunch and headed out the door. I took my dark green convertible down the four blocks to his house and walked up to his door. The ding from the doorbell rang as my sweating fingers released the button. It had to be about 100 degrees and it was only 11:30! He opened the door and I walked in, thankful to feel the cool air conditioning hit my body. Not much was said, we’re guys, what do you expect? I went downstairs and plopped down on the cool leather sofa. We watched TV for about an hour, and I couldn’t take it anymore, I was so bored.

"Let’s go do something!" I pleaded.

"Sure, but what is there to do?" questioned Kellen, "There’s nothing to do in this town."

"I know, but we can find something, let’s drive around." I said.

"All right."

We got in my car and started driving. We drove by each of our friends’ houses to see if they by chance were outside so we could pick them up. Just our luck, no one was. We continued on our trip, and I drove just outside of city limits to what people called "The Cult House." It is supposed to be a haunted scary place, but nothing is scary during the day, and we had been there before at night, so we wanted to see what was really in there. We got out of the car and walked on the path to the house. It was really old and very small. Not really all that scary, but I’d have a different opinion at night. We walked inside, but there wasn’t really anything to look at. It was just an abandoned, old house. I went through a broken door into what looked like it used to be the living room. In the corner of the room was a bottle. It looked like one of those lamps in the movie "Aladdin."

"Hey! Kellen, come here, look at this." I said.

"Whoa! Rub it, it might give you a wish," he laughed sarcastically.

I pulled the cloth that was hanging out the end of the "lamp" and rubbed it to humor Kellen. All of a sudden, a huge puff of smoke came out of the end of the lamp, and the room was full of smoke. When it cleared, there stood a huge, buff guy in the middle of the room.

"What the?!" Kellen exclaimed.

"Hello boys, I am the genie of this here lamp. It’s about time someone rubbed it, I’ve got a horrible cramp in my neck." The genie said. "All right, you want your three wishes or what?"

"Three wishes?" I asked.

"Yeah, you know how it goes, rub the lamp, see the genie, and get three wishes. But I have to set a few ground rules. No wishing for loads of money, $100,000 maximum per wish. No wishing for more wishes, and no wishing to hurt someone." The genie explained.

"All right, I wish for $100,000." I said.

"Wish granted," The genie said.

Another puff of smoke filled the room, and when it cleared, a chest sat in the corner of the room. I ran over to it, opened it, and inside it was a ton of 100-dollar bills. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

"This is awesome!" I yelled. "All right another wish. Let’s see."

"Wish for a Ferrari!" yelled Kellen.

"No way, I hate Ferrari’s," I replied.

But behind the arguing boys, the genie said, "Wish granted."

The smoke routine occurred again, and outside sat a brand new Ferrari.

"What!? No," I screamed, "I didn’t want a Ferrari!"

"Sorry, but your friend here said "wish" and what he wanted in the same sentence. Therefore, I have to grant the wish." The genie replied.

"Way to go Kellen! I didn’t want a stupid Ferrari." I said.

"I’ll take it!" Kellen exclaimed.

"Ok, one more wish," I said. " Let’s see, what should it be?" I thought for a good five minutes until it hit me. "I wish to never be sick again"

"Wish granted," The genie said. But this time after the smoked cleared, the genie was gone and so was the lamp. I didn’t feel much different, but I was never sick again. But the only regret I’ve had from my last wish, I haven’t missed a day of school since.
