October Sky

In the movie October Sky, Homer is a teenager that has plans to build a rocket. Through the times he tries to make a rocket he has to complete many obstacles. His biggest one is his father. He also has many little ones and they help him get to where he wants to be.

Homer got an idea about making a rocket from the German scientist Werner von Braun. The first obstacle he has to go through is when he asks Quinton for help. Quinton is kind of stereotyped as a nerd in his school. So Homer takes this chance to talk to him, so he is placing his popularity on the line. Even though he isn’t very popular.

Another obstacle was his father. His father was the head guy of the coalmine and he wants Homer to take his place when he has to quit working or he dies. He wants him to take care of the family if he is to die. He tells Homer that he doesn’t want any rockets on the coalmine property, so they have to walk seven miles to get to a place where they are not on the property.

When the police came and took the boys away for starting a fire would become their next obstacle. They go to the dance and someone comes to get Homer and he finds out his father was injured in a mining accident. So he has to start working in the mine so his brother can finish school for his football career. So Homer quits with the rocket business and starts working in the mine.

After his father gets better he starts making rockets again and goes to the science fair and goes to the finals. They find out that they can’t take all of them and that only one can go. All of the rocket boys pick Homer. So Homer goes and the second day someone steals his thing. So he gets someone to send it to him so he can continue. Homer finally wins and I think his father comes over an obstacle too when Homer returns. He shows up to Homer and the rocket boy’s final shooting of the rocket.

Homer’s obstacles made him how he was. If he had not of had them then this book would have been very boring. Homer overcame them and showed his town that not only football jocks can get scholarships.
