Prologue
Picture yourself being in a huge dust storm and not being able to see five feet ahead of you or not being able to take in a breath without dust swarming into your lungs. For many farmers in the Dust Bowl, this was a frequent experience. The Dust Bowl was a time of extreme blizzards, tornadoes, floods, droughts, and dirt storms in the Midwest of the United States. Poor agricultural practices and years of sustained drought caused the Dust Bowl, along with not having the right knowledge to fertilize their crops and keep their rich soil.
We wanted to analyze the Dust Bowl because we didn’t really know much about the subject and wanted to learn more. We knew that it was a time of drought and happened in the southern states of America. We also didn’t really know whom to interview and when Kyler remembered that his Grandma lived during the Dust Bowl we decided to pick this topic. By interviewing Mae Crawford, we got a full view of what the Dust Bowl was like from the point of view of someone that lived during this period. After we interviewed Mrs. Crawford we realized how tough it was to live during the Dust Bowl and how little luxuries you had.
As you go through our website you will see a woman’s point of view of the Dust Bowl, many pictures of this time period, and many genres showing how hard that Dust Bowl was. You will learn how tough it was for farmers to grow crops and how much it hurt the American economy. This project was a great experience for us and made us think about the Dust Bowl in a whole new way.
