We approached her house in the golf cart at Hillcrest where we were currently on hole number eight. We walked through the little valley where excessive rain amounts flow through creating a creek. We speed walked up to her house to get her and get going again, yet it really was a fairly quiet day for the golf course. As we were walking up to her house through the open field, we walked past the newly planted tree and the kitchen windows where we could see that the light was turned off.
My grandma rapidly walked out of the house and shouted since she has a hard time hearing, “I’m ready.” As she pulled the back garage door shut, she began to walk faster and started talking to my mom about her lawn. Drew and I followed to keep moving along and back to the golf cart. I noticed Grandma Mae was wearing black pants, a white shirt, and a lightweight, black sweater. Her hair was curled since she went through it with a curling iron. She also had gold earrings on, her glasses, and tan sandals on her feet. “Do you think I need to water my lawn a little more, Marlene?” she asked my mom.
“Well, I think I would, but it is totally up to you,” my mom said as she examined the slightly dry spots of her yard.
Once she was done thinking about it she said, “I think I will. You know, it has been so dry lately and it has been hard on it. I’ll have to change the schedule that I water.” She turned around and said to Drew and me, “So how are you guys? Are you golfing good?”
“We’re doing all right,” we said as we came up to the golf cart. My grandma nodded her head thinking we were actually doing great.
My mom said, “Oh yeah, you guys are doing just fine. Of course, it is much better than I could ever do!”
Mom and Grandma were sitting in the seats in front while Drew and I were sitting on each side of the back of the golf cart. We continued to play our round of golf as my mom and grandma watched and talked about some different things. My grandma did not really know what was a good shot or a bad shot. I did not expect her to though, which was great in some cases since we were not always exactly playing our “A” game.
Occasionally, Grandma would get a huge grin on her face and say “Nice shot” extremely loudly and other positive comments even though some of them really were not. Throughout our round, Grandma continued to talk to my mom and exchanged gossip. Grandma would say excitedly with a happy look on her face, “I had meant to ask you earlier if you had heard about so and so?” Grandma and Mom would also talk about the houses that lined the edge of the golf course.
Drew and I had no interest in their conversations at all and would start one of our own.
We came to hole number twelve where one of the most hilarious moments happened with my grandma. I was on my second shot with Drew taking some practice swings. My Grandma was looking aimlessly with a puzzled look on her face. I approached the ball after taking a couple practice swings. I was completely focused on golfing, and then I began to pull my club back.
Right in the middle of my back swing, it seemed to me that Grandma said loudly, “So Marlene, what are you doing this afternoon?” Luckily, I had time to stop in my back swing to stop myself from having a bad shot. My Grandma did not know that she should be quiet when someone is getting ready to swing or even in the process of swinging in my case.
While I was laughing hysterically, I looked over at Drew who was trying to contain himself to stop from cracking up. However, it was just too much for both of us, and we still laugh about it to this day.
Grandma is still the same to me three years later from when this happened. My Grandpa Everett passed away two months before this event occurred. She is doing very well and stays active in her life. She is one of the most important people in my life because she is not only my grandma, but also a great friend.
