Character Sketch

At some point in everybody’s life, there is always a hero or someone that has had an influence in that person’s life. Throughout my years there have always been many people that have had an impact and influence in my life, but there has only been one that has had the biggest impact. This person is definitely my grandpa. His name is Tom Spicketts and he was born in Italy.

Right now he lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan where my family and I travel to every year to visit my relatives. My grandpa has had a big influence in my life in many different ways. He is probably the best listener I have ever met and he definitely gives great advice. We have a great bond with each other just like Paul and Norman had towards the end of the book. The best thing that he has taught me is how to be nice and generous to others. He is always thinking of others instead of himself.

When I am in Michigan my first thing that I want to do is to go golfing with my grandpa. He always gives me the best advice on playing golf, and helps me with all my weaknesses. Usually after we go golfing, we go out to eat at Coyote Creek where they serve the best ribs. I always enjoy listening to all of the stories he tells me about when he was in World War two and how he won a purple medal for bravery on saving his crew on a ship in the Indian Ocean. My favorite stories he tells me are the ones about the mistakes he made when he was younger. This helps me in knowing what not to do when I get older. For example, he was a milk truck driver and one night that he didn’t get enough sleep and he was driving and he fell asleep and almost got into a terrible car wreck. Luckily he woke up in time to and was able to pull over and take a little rest.

The first time we met was when my mom and me flew in a plane over to Kalamazoo when I was five. As I was walking out of the plane, I dropped my bag mostly filled with ninja turtle toys and my grandpa came on to the plane and helped me pick it all up. At first I didn’t know it was him. Throughout all of the years that I have known him, I have never had a conflict with him, and we have never had an argument with each other.

If I ever thought that I have learned everything possible from my grandpa, then I would definitely be wrong. Every time I go there he always has something new to teach me or to tell me. I certainly can’t wait until my family and I go on our vacation to Michigan this next summer. My grandpa is definitely the most influencial person in my life right now and that will never change. My grandpa and I relate to the book we are reading because we have a bond like Norman and his brother. Even though they don’t always get along, they always eventually compromise. This is why my grandpa is the most heroic in my life.
