Homer’s Qualities

 

In the movie October Sky the main character Homer Hickam shows a lot of his great qualities. Some of Homers qualities include perseverance, integrity, and kindness. Homer expresses these qualities in response to conflict in the movie.

Homer shows perseverance when he starts building the rockets. No one supported him and he destroyed his mother’s fence. Homer takes this in stride and learns from his mistakes. He strives to learn more about the optimum way to build a rocket. The first time Homer tries to shoot a rocket, he demolishes his mother’s fence; after such an incident many people would have given up. Homer also shows perseverance when his father gets hurt and Homer must go to work in the mine

The people that provide help and support to Homer and his friends The Rocket Boys, can see good in the young scientists. Homer can be trusted to do the right thing, causing many to willingly supply materials and labor for the rockets. At the local science fair, Homer’s main explanation piece is stolen, and luckily, due to his admirable integrity, the town gives Homer aid.

Homer expresses kindness as he reaches out to Quentin, the town nerd. Homer knows that Quentin would be a valuable addition to The Rocket Boys because he has strong skills in Math. Homer is kind to Quentin even when they have differences in their lives. Many people would have taken Quentin for granted and treated him badly; however, as their friendship grows, Homer starts to truly appreciate Quentin.

Homer also expresses kindness when he goes to see Miss Riley in the hospital. One can tell that Homer and the Rocket Boys have good kind hearts; after they visit Miss Riley in the hospital, they dedicate their last rocket to her.

These are just a few of the great qualities that Homer shares in the movie. Homer and the Rocket Boys take these qualities of life and go far.
