Essay of Place

The warm soothing campfire, fishing on the dock, and hanging out with family are just a few of the things that we do at my cabin in Milbank. This is a place that has been part of my life ever since I was about five.

The cabin is a part of me just because my family built it with there own hands. I remember going down to the beach below while they cut down all the trees to clear where the cabin would go. It took about a day and a half to get most of the area cleared and I just remember that I was so excited for it get finished. And finally the next summer, it was.

Even though the actual cabin was built, there was a lot more work to be done around the house. I remember planting grass, helping out with building the deck, and putting in steps from the deck to the beach. I think that working so hard taught me that nothing is really easy and that you have work for something that you want.

My cabin is one floor, but enough space for us. The first thing you see when you walk into the cabin is the small kitchen that we have. I remember in this kitchen every morning my uncle Steve would cook pancakes and eggs for all of the kids. Then when you would walk to the left of the kitchen, there is a room with a table, chairs, and a big table full of cards, poker chips, and booklets of paper to keep score. In this room all we do is play poker and stay up forever. The poker room is connected straight to the family room where there is a big window that looks out onto the lake. I’ve actually sat in that room and would stare out the window forever. I think the view that that window gives you kind of makes you appreciate nature and its beauties.

Out back we have a huge deck, the dock, and fire pit. On the dock, we basically fish. My opinion on fishing is that it teaches you to be patient. I learned that the fish will come to you, so wait. At this particular lake, we fish for good ol’ walleye. The fire, my cousins and I just go out there every night and cook the fish that we have caught during the day and just to get away from the older parents. Also, The deck is very big, and it’s nice, because, there is so much to look at out there. The lake is so pretty, and the grasses are just so green, and it’s a very beautiful place to be.

My cabin is about a mile away from this really good bar and grill that we usually to go play pool. We always have a good time up there because we just have tournaments, even though I never win.

Is so much about my cabin that is a part of me that I wish to keep a partof me forever. I teaches me about the finer things in life. It’s not all about TV’s and video games, or about boys and going out at night. I think my cabin teaches me about how much we waste on things that don’t matter in life sometimes. I think life is about family, and my cabin has taught me that. I think that without this place, I would be a completely different person than I am today. I try and think about how much my cabin has influenced me without me even thinking about it until now. I think that life has more to offer than what I saw, and I think that without my family’s hard work, there would be no me.
