The author I am going to talk about is William Conton. He has written many
fables and folktales and other short stories in his lifetime. He was born in
Bathurst, (now present day Banjul) Gambia.
His parents were middle class educated parents. William was educated in
Gambia and Sierra Leone as a youngster.
Upon his return to Sierra Leone
from England, where he had his secondary and university education, he served
first as principal of the government secondary school in Bo and for many years
afterwards as Chief Education Officer of the Sierra Leone government.
He writes folktales and
short stories mainly about Africans or young Africans growing up in Africa. His
first ever publication called The African ranks Conton among the first
group of modern African writers to emerge from the 1950’s and 60’s. In
addition to The African, he has written many short stories as well as an African
history textbook that has been used widely in African schools. His type of
writing techniques is friendly and easily understandable to young kids reading
his folktales, short stories and books.
In conclusion, William Conton caught my interest as an African writer
because his short stories are great for kids to read and are not hard to find. By Steve |
