The Princess Who Could Sing

                        By:Alli Johnson

Once upon a time, there lived a Princess who loved to sing. Nobody thought this Princess had any talent at all. However, she knew her talent was singing. She lived with her parents and brother in a castle. She sang in her room every night quietly so no one could hear. She was afraid to get laughed at. Her one wish was to one day be known for her singing throughout the town of Shimmila.

One night, while the Princess was singing in her room, her mom heard her and woke up. Her mom came into her room and asked her what in the world she was doing. After the Princess told her mother what she was doing, her mother suggested that she sang in the courtyard the next day at noon in front of the whole town of Shimmila. The Princess insisted that her mom not make her do that.

"There is no way I can get in front of all those people and sing!" said the Princess.

"Of course you can! I will tell everyone to be there." Said the Queen, as she exited the room.

The Princess had no idea on what to do. She could not sleep at all and new she would have to wake up the next morning and get prepared to sing in front of the entire town. Then she had an idea! She decided to go out into the woods and sing to the animals to see what their response would be. She snuck out of the house and crept quietly out to the woods. There, she started to sing the best that she could. She soon realized that she scared all the animals away!

"You should really do that inside Princess," said the raccoon.

"We are trying to sleep!! Go away!" said the owl.

"You are hurting our ears!! Said the Rabbit.

The Princess ran out of the woods sobbing. Once she got into her room she sat there and she cried. She knew she was going to be humiliated in front of the entire town and there was nothing she could do about it. She knew her mother expected her there and there was no way out.

Soon enough, the next day came and she knew what had to be done. She woke up and put on her favorite dress and braided her hair the way her mother had taught her. Once she was ready, she headed out to the courtyard. She had never been so nervous in her life. As she walked into the courtyard, everyone applauded her and was ready to hear her talent. She took a deep breath and started to sing. She thought she was doing great. She sounded just as she did when she sang in her room late at night. After she was done with her song, she looked after and there was only 6 people left in the crowd! Everyone had left and hated her singing. She was horrified. She looked over at her mother and she had a look on her face that the Princess would never forget. Her parents were embarrassed of her and her brother was laughing at her.

"I am sorry," said that Princess.

The princess ran to her room and told herself she would never, ever come out.

She sat in her room for a couple days and would not let anyone into her room and would not eat. One day she let her brother in.

"You know," said her brother "It is okay that you can’t sing and will never become a singer, there are many other things you can be."

The Princess started to cry once again and told her brother to leave her room. She didn’t want to be something else. She wanted to sing. She told herself at that moment that she would do anything she could to become a great singer and she would show everyone else.

From then on, the Princess sang every night. She sang till she couldn’t sing anymore. She went out late at night and sang as she walked through the woods and picked flowers. One night she ran into a small cottage in the woods. She knocked on the door and a lady old lady answered the door. The Lady was very short with blonde spiral hair. When she opened the door, I could smell she was baking something.

"Come on in darling," said the old lady. "I was just making cookies."

The Princess came inside and tried one of the cookies. They tasted delicious.

"I can see you’re the princess," said the lady. "My name is Charlotte."

"Nice to meet you Charlotte," said the Princess.

The two talked forever and the princess explained her problem with her singing. It turned out that Charlotte was a singer herself and agreed to give the Princess lessons to help her become better. All the Princess had to do was stop by the cottage occasionally to eat cookies with Charlotte and she would agree to give the Princess lessons. The Princess couldn’t wait!

A week went by and the Princess walked to the cottage every night to get her lessons. The Princess knew she was getting better by the day and couldn’t wait to prove to her town that she could indeed sing. After a week and a half of Charlotte’s lessons, the Princess knew she was ready to sing to everyone.

One morning she ran into the queen’s bedroom and woke her up.

"Mother! I am ready to sing!" said the Princess.

"What are you talking about honey?" said the Queen.

"Announce to everyone that I am singing once again in the courtyard today at noon!"

"Darling." said the Queen, "I don’t know if you should do this"

"I will show you mother!" said the Princess, "noon in the courtyard!" said the Princess as she ran out of the room.

None came and the Princess was at the courtyard sharp. When she got there nobody was there. She was very scared no one would show up. Soon enough, more and more people came to give her one more chance to prove herself. The Princess knew she could do it. Once the place was quite full, her mother gave her the signal to begin.

The Princess stood up with perfect posture and told herself she could do it. She began singing. She didn’t worry about how well she sounded, she sang from her heart and gave every word she sang all she had.

Once she was finished, she looked around at the crowd and their faces. Everyone was amazed with her performance. Even the animals in the forest came once they heard the beautiful voice. Her parents ran to give her a hug, even her brother. There, far in the courtyard, was Charlotte. The Princess ran to give Charlotte a hug.

"Thank you so much!" said the Princess.

"Oh, It was all you! You just had to believe you could do it!" said Charlotte.

From that day on, the Princess performed a song to the town of Shimmila every night. The people loved her and she was known for her singing forever. Her one wish had come true. When she wasn’t singing, she spent much of her time at Charlotte’s, baking cookies. Everyone lived happily ever after.
