You
first meet Richie in the being of the book. He says he is from New York. The
reason why he was going to the war was messed up paperwork. At first he wasn’t
going to go due to his leg but eventually went. Richie is a black and has good
character. His first friend he meets is pee-wee and is very cocky but a good
friend. Richie gets there and already starts thinking about his brother back
home which shows how much he cares for his family. Richie is not what you call a
“BIG WAR HERO” but still will fight if necessary. Later in the book he kills
his first cong and is overwhelmed and disgusted.
When
Johnson dies the leader of Richies Company he is very devastated and so is the
rest of his team. Richie describes how much he cares and loves pee-wee and his
other friends in his team. He really gets close to pee-wee because he is also
black and was with him for a day in a cong hole hiding form the congs. He
finally gets out and is overjoyed and finds out that PeeWee is very hurt. So he
helps carry pee-wee to the drop zone to go back to camp. He also saved Brunner
form congs in the bushes. To me Richie is a very loving caring guy. To me Richie
is a huge war hero and great fighter. At the end he goes home safe with his best
friend which means very much to him and also feels good to see his family once
again.
