Daringness
and Terror and Death is Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers which recalls the
Vietnam War through the eyes of Richard Perry an African American.
Perry is 17 and on his way to Vietnam, a new life and a whole new world. He
volunteered to serve his country, unlike draftees. Thinking of his home in
Harlem and his family though Perry has second thoughts.
The horridness of the war nearly takes him over. Death is the
only thing that comes knocking at his door day after day, night after night, he
just doesn’t answer. He has the same horrible food everyday, with little sleep
and a shit load of mosquitoes. He wakens only the support of the platoon and
safety of his gun.
Perry
gets hurt, but the wound is not bad enough to send him home. He returns to the
same hot, muggy place and the madness starts to settle around him. The intense
fear of friends dieing all-round…
