In the movie October Sky Homer was an all American boy from a small coal town, Coalwood, West Virginia. Unlike most of the people there, Homer had a dream to explore the universe and not work in the coalmines. He was inspired by the Russian rocket Sputnik to start rocketry.
After his interest in rocketry started, it never stopped. Most of his friends and neighbors reacted with fear or distrust about the whole Sputnik thing. But
Homer was instantly fascinated and began studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. He didn’t do it on his own though; he had some help from several of his friends and from his teacher. One of the most helpful things that Homer got was a book of rocketry from his teacher that helped him do a lot of the calculations. The book helps him to the town that his rockets didn’t start the fire. He made all these calculations to find the one rocket that they could not account for.
He proved to his town that he could be a rocketry, and his principal let him back into school, and he got to go to the science fair. He won first place and he got to go to the state division and won first place there too. When he got home he, flew his one last rocket in the name of Ms. Riley for all her help with is goals.
With Homer inspired and not letting his problems get to him, he accomplished the one thing in his life that he dreamed of. So if we all don’t let our problems get to us, we could accomplish our goals just as Homer.
