The Carousel in Central Park
Ever since 1871 there has been a carousel in Central Park. However, many of the 130,000 people who ride it every year do not know the history behind it. Many of the carousels that have been part of the park have been destroyed, except the one that stands today.
In 1871 the first carousel was placed in Central Park. Then, nine years later a fire destroyed it. Mules powered the next merry go round until they were replaced by electricity in 1916. After being used for so long, a new carousel was needed due to everyday wear and tear. The one found was originally used at the beginning of the 20th century on Coney Island. Brooklyn firm of Stein and Goldstein crafted the merry go round in 1908. Later, it was placed in storage until park officials found it. Five years afterward, the carousel was restored and placed in Central Park for use by thousands. The carousel consists of 58 hand-painted and hand-carved horses, which are enclosed within an octagonal building. This building is located at the south end of central park and is used by hundreds of people everyday.
