I think that banning books or requiring someone to be 18 years old to
read a certain book is a really bad idea. Someone who is 13 and 14 years old can
buy explicit CDs, so why should requiring someone to be 18 in order to check out
an explicit book be any different?
There
is also graphic violence on TV and video games, so why should they take out
explicit books with graphic violence? That makes absolutely no sense at all.
There is also questionable language on TV and video games, and nobody is making
a big deal out of that. I thought librarians were supposed to be smart and not
make bad decisions like this.
If
I were the town council, when the parents complained about Ulysses, I
would just tell them that if they are so concerned with what their son reads,
they should monitor what kind of books he checks out from the library. Besides,
the kid that checked the book out was a senior, and I think he could handle
whatever explicit content the book contained.
These
reasons support my opinion for not banning books from the library. If someone
can go to a PG-13 movie or buy an explicit CD, they should also be able to check
out an explicit book from the library. If the parents still don’t want their
children to check out explicit books, then they should pay closer attention to
what their children read. They have to realize that their children will get
exposed to explicit content sometime in their life and they won’t be there to
stop it from happening.
