The Day I Got Lost

My summer of 2000 started out great. School just got out and I couldn’t wait to go tanning and swimming. One day my dad came home and started telling us about this camp Messiah in Nebraska. I really thought it was a stupid idea because I wanted to do what I wanted to do this summer, not what my dad thought would be cool. Then he told me I should go and bring a friend just to see how it is. So I told him I’d think about it but, I was really thinking "who’d want to go to some camp in Nebraska?"

I was thinking of people that might want to go but, couldn’t think of very many people. I thought of Stephanie, Kristen, or Amanda. They were all busy, so I asked my cousin Kendra to go. I knew she would because she is never doing anything else. She agreed to go and then we were just waiting for the date to come. July 10th, came around fast I was really tanned and I knew that this summer would be great until we drove to camp.

We got there about noon on a Thursday and had to get settled in. I didn’t really want to go but I thought, "well I’m already here."

This camp was huge it was bigger then I thought it would be and I was really surprised. Once we got settled we had to introduce ourselves to everyone, which was embarrassing.

We finally came to our cabin, cabin fifteen. I was happy because fifteen is my favorite number and I was in the same cabin as my cousin. I unpacked my stuff and sat on my bunk.

I told my cousin that we should go for a walk because I hated just sitting around no where. So we told the counslers where we were going and left. We didn’t know our way around this place and I couldn’t even remember the name of the town. We were walking down this hill when I tripped on a big branch and fell down the hill I felt so stupid I started laughing and got up. My cousin helped me up and we started to walk back when we noticed we didn’t know where we were. I was so scared at first but, after awhile I knew we were lost!

Finally we found a pay phone in the middle of nowhere and I had some change in my pocket so we called my dad’s cell phone to tell him we had no clue where we were. He answered and was very mad about all this and so he said for us to stay where we were and he’d be there.

This place where we were at was only an hour away from my house so my dad told us to wait there for him to come. I felt so stupid and scared I could hardly stop crying.
Finally about and hour and a half later my dad came. We were so happy to see him but he was very mad to see us. He finally took us back to the camp ground and when we got back the counslers were looking for us. The had radios and called in saying they found us. It was the most embarrassing moment I’ve ever had. We finally settled in and finished the rest of the week at camp but, after that we knew where everything was and that was the time I got lost.
