When writer Mary Crow Dog was younger, she never thought she would grow up to be part of an amazing contribution for her people known as AIM. She never thought she would marry a powerful leader and medicine man Leonard Crow Dog. Nor did she think she would write such an impassioned and inspirational book Lakota Woman.
In this autobiography she tells about her life story, her many struggles and her major accomplishments that changed her life. She lived her life on the Rosebud Reservation. She was poor and had many hardships during her early days. One of her most memorable moments was when she was taken away from her family and was forced to go to a Catholic boarding school. She had a lot of difficult times she had to deal with, whether it was with the kids there, the teachers, or missing her family, whom she never able to see.
A couple of years later, she did everything she could to get her worries out of the way. She started drinking, smoking, doing drugs, and whatever else she could think of to get things off her mind. She soon found out that was the last thing she needed, and felt the need to change her way of living.
She decided she wanted to join the American Indian Movement, also known as AIM. They took the road and traveled to fight for the American Indian rights. While she was involved with AIM, she met Leonard Crow Dog. Their movement led to the protest at Wounded Knee. They were there for 72 days, and there, they fought against hundreds of feds. While Mary was there, she had a little boy named Pedro.
Mary Crow Dog, at the end of the book, was 37 and Leonard was 50. They grew together and had 3 kids. They are now back in the Rosebud Reservation, where they still practice their beliefs. They still attend all their ceremonies, and The Sundance is still performed at the Old Crow Dog place. And until this day, they still fight for their rights.
This book has a very strong meaning. Mary Crow Dog tells you the way it was in her lifetime. We thought this book was very powerful and good. It was interesting because it used real historical events, and it detailed a lot of intriguing facts about her whole ordeal with everything that went on in her life. This book will show you how the Indians are really treated, and how they live their lives everyday. It will teach you how to live your life, because now you know how they were treated, and that you are lucky enough to have the freedom that most of them do not have.
