The Year I was born…

My life was going pretty good, I had my parents to myself, all the toys and games I wanted, and also the peace and quiet when needed. I loved it all, enjoying every minute. Then it happened…life ended on August 8, 1986.

At 8:08am. I was legally a discouraged brother. I was a brother to 8lbs. 8oz. Megan Lynn. At first I was a little nervous since breathing was an issue for her.

Well, after a few weeks my mom went back to work at the hospital, as she continues to be an RN. As for my dad, he worked at Job Service. Both jobs bring in good enough money to support us but at the same time teach me to share.

After supper was my time to spend with Megan, as my mom did her ritual and watched MacGyver, and our dad started to snore while watching the news. My interests in life were cars, so I would sit with Megan and tell her about the 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign 4.2 that just came out.

In the morning I introduced her to cartoons and the best cereals! All I would let her eat is Kix and Chex. My mom would be cleaning up around the house listening to her music that drove us crazy!

One afternoon the four of us were sitting in the family room watching a game of baseball. The Orioles were playing; as we were cheering them on the 3rd grand slam was hit setting the record! Later that night with me in one arm and Megan in another, my dad watched the news. I tried to follow along, and all I understood was that a volcano near Lake Nyros released toxic gas and killed 1200 people in Cameroon.

As Megan was learning to say, "mom, dad, and milk," I was starting preschool learning the ABC’s. During the day we would watch The Magic School Bus and Reading Rainbow. Megan would try to help me with my homework, but she didn’t understand.

Being a big brother is a lot of work, but I think I am doing a good job! I had many skills and situations to learn about; some like sharing, being gentle, and that Megan is a girl not a boy. I had to learn about jealousy and how to deal with it since I was not the youngest anymore. But things are going good, and I enjoy looking after my little sister.
