There are many obstacles that Homer has to face during the course for this movie. He wants to get a scholarship so he doesn’t have to go work in the coalmine, which his father is working for as the head of all the men. He takes many chances to get to the science fair and win. He goes through getting beat up on the football to getting his rocket stolen from him at the science fair. He goes though a long and hard process to get where he wants to be.
At first he wants to get on the football team because he knows if he doesn’t then he will not get a scholarship to anywhere and then he will have to go work at the coalmine. He is not very good at football and gets beat around and quits the team. That night he hears about the Germans having a rocket in space and he decides to build a better rocket than anyone else and win the science fair.
The next obstacle he has to get through is how to build the rocket and get it to fly. He asks these kids in his class to help him and asks his dad to help the materials so they can build it. His dad thinks it is a bad idea to do this and tells him that he cannot build the rocket on company property and he has to walk eight miles to get off company property. So he and his friends walk eight miles just about everyday to work on the rocket. The build a little shelter to protect them forms the rockets that don’t work. They go through a lot of rockets they even get arrested because the police think that one of their rockets starts a fire. Homer is kicked out of school and his dad makes him go work at the mine. After while he says to himself that coalmining is not for him and goes and finds the missing rocket and is accepted back into school.
They finely get the rocket to work and go straight up in the air. So they take it to the state science fair and win it. The principal tell the boys that there can only be one person that goes to the nationals. So Homer goes while he is there part of his project is stolen and so is his picture of Werner Von Braun. So he calls back home and tells his mom and she gets the piece made for the fair gets it in time for the judging. They win the science fair and they get a scholarship. When he gets home he finds out that the teacher that helped him do this is sick and they make a rocket just for her and shoot it off for the last time.
So Homer went through many obstacles and finds his way through all of them. He gets his scholarship and everything is going well with his father. He ends up working with NASA.
