In the movie October Sky there were many obstacles that Homer had to overcome. First of all he was a teenager at this time and being a teenager is very difficult. When he tried out for the football team and ended up not making the team was an obstacle that actually helped him pursue his real dreams of making rockets and someday working for NASA. When he wanted to learn more about rockets, he could not find information or anyone that knew about rockets till he noticed a kid that wasn’t very popular, but knew a lot about rockets. He had to overcome the humiliation of talking to this kid and not caring about what other people thought about him.
When Homer’s friends decided to help Homer with his rockets, they needed to weld a washer to the end of the rocket. They went to Homer’s dad’s welding shop and had a man weld it for them
, even though his dad would not approve of this. After the four boys fired off their second rocket, Homer’s dad banned any rockets on the town’s property. The four boys had to travel eight miles each day they wanted to shoot off a rocket. When they needed more money for metal to make the rocket, they thought of a creative way to make some money by taking apart an old railroad and turn in the metal for money. Another obstacle was when the police said that they could not shoot any more rockets because they thought the rocket boys had started a forest fire. They ended up proving the police wrong by figuring out math problems to prove that their rockers didn’t start the fire and were able to fly their rockets again. When Homer went to Indianapolis for the national science fair that he eventually won, someone stole a piece of his presentation. Luckily he called home, and his dad gave in and let the welder weld a new piece.
Homer and his friends faced many obstacles in pursuing their dreams, and because of that they where down at times but they accomplished them and had a great future because of that.
