Puerto Rican People
For
my part of the project I did some research on people of Puerto Rico. I found out
that about 3.580 million people live on the island of Puerto Rico. It is known
that 1,000 people per square mile. That ratio is higher than any of the fifty
states in the United States. It is estimated that 200 Puerto Ricans have
migrated though to the United States. If those people didn’t migrate then
there wouldn’t be any room for people to live. Some people have come back to
the islands though because of inadequate economic opportunity in the United
States
People of Puerto Rico represent a distinct culture and racial mix. When the Spanish people forced the Tania people into slavery, the entire population was virtually decimated. except for a few who escaped into the mountains. Eventually they intermarried with the poor Spanish farmers and became known as Jibaros. But now days because of industrialization and migration to the cities few of jibaros are there.
When the United States acquired the island of Puerto Rico in 1898, American influence was added to the culture. If you were to ask someone about Puerto Rican people, they are known to be friendly, hospitable and expressive by tourists. Puerto Ricans consider themselves Americans but are fiercely proud of their island and their culture. They don’t usually call themselves Americans or americanoes but puertorriquenos or boricuas. To Puerto Ricans my country means Puerto Rico, it does not mean the United States.
Some Puerto Ricans use the word criollo to describe things native to the
island. Like music, cuisine, language, arts, people, religion, and other aspects
of the island culture. Some primary ethnicity or the main one is Hispanic. There
is some Americans that live in Puerto Rico but not as many Puerto Ricans. It is
known that as of today the population is 3,037,316 as of 2001.
the migration is 2.7 million Puerto
Ricans
The birth rate is 15.26. wow that’s a lot. Death rate is 7.77. Some of the major causes of death are heart disease and cancers, diabetes, cerebrovascular disease, pneumonia and influenza. Most of theses diseases are spread and are caught. That’s about it for that. The education is really different from ours ,let's just say that. But that is the end of my project.
