Homer was a teen boy in the movie October Sky. His dream was to become some part of NASA, or build rockets. One of the obstacles that got in the way of Homer reaching his dream was his dad wanting him to work at the coalmine and take his place someday. Homer did think that his father and he were similar, but they just had different dreams.

One other obstacle was that, when his dad got hurt down in the coalmine, they didn’t have enough money to cover the bills. Homer dropped out of school and went to work in the coalmine. Of course when his dad recovered, he went back to work, so Homer thought he should go back to school and reach his dreams. Once he got back on track with school, everything after that kept on getting better.

He and his friends entered the science fair and won nationals and got the trip to Indianapolis; only one of them could go. His friend decided to let him go. His teacher that was helping him through this all, Ms. Riley, was so proud of him and his friends. She believed in him even before he believed in himself, and that really made him believe in himself.

When he went to Indianapolis to present their display of rocket science, he won first place; therefore, he got scholarships for college.  When he returned home, he launched his last rocket. Many people came just to see it, even his dad. Later on he went to college, became a scientist for NASA, and trained astronauts.

He reached his dream, and his friends were very successful also. He got through every obstacle, and his dad finally believed in him in the very end. All Homer went through was worth the while in the long run.
