Little
Rock’s first public high school, Sherman High School, began in 1869. Sherman
High School was located at 7th and Sherman Streets. In 1885, the
school was moved to 14th and Scott Streets were it was renamed Scott
Street High School. In 1890, the school was moved again to West Capital and
Gaines Street and renamed Peabody High School. The school was named in honor of
George Peabody, who donated $200,000 to the construction of the new school. In
1905 the school was moved back to 14th and Scott Streets and was
renamed Little Rock Senior High School. The school had been considered the most
modern high school in the country at the time of its opening because they had
telephone connection in each room, extensive science laboratory, shop class,
modern heating and ventilation systems, electric lighting, and the most modern
plumbing with water fountains and shower baths in the gymnasium. In 1927, Little
Rock Senior High School moved for the fifth and final time to 14th
and Park Streets. In 1953, the school board renamed the school to Little Rock
Central High School. It was renamed so that when they would open the second high
school, there would be less confusion. The second high school opened in 1957 and
was named Hall High School.
Little
Rock Central High School offers several athletic activities such as, football,
basketball, baseball, track, soccer, and softball. The school mascot is the
Tiger. The tiger has been the mascot since 1894. The tigers hold the nation’s
longest winning streak in high school track from 1926 to 1945. The football and
basketball teams have won more state titles than any other high school in the
state of Arkansas. Many tiger players have gone on to gain success on
professional football, basketball, and baseball teams.
