When Melba Pattilllo Beals was 12, she read about the 1954 Brown vs Board of Education Supreme Court decision. While she read, she wondered if she would ever be able to drink from a fountain that didn’t have “colored” all over it.
When she was 15, she and eight other African-Americans went to school at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Melba faced rampant killer mobs.
In 1958-1959 school year Melba went to California to continue her education. When she graduated, she went to San Francisco to earn her graduate degree. She worked as a reporter for NBC and today is a communications consultant. Now she is an author.
Melba has three kids, one daughter and twin sons. They live in San Francisco.
