Essay of Place

By Whitney

While reading this book, A River Runs Through It, I noticed that both Norman and Paul have a strong sense of place. They are a part of the river in Montana and it is apart of them. When I read that part in the book, it really made me think of a place that I like to go a lot. I have read in other books and have seen in movies that people usually have their own special place that means a lot to them. People go to these places to think or spend time with friends or family or even just to think about life in general.

I have my own special place I go to when I need to think or I need to spend some time by myself. This place isn’t too far from my own home. It is about two miles. You follow a long paved road for about a mile. You can see a wide dirt road coming up ahead, and you turn and follow it for about another mile. I love my spot. Once you reach the end, there is a metal rail above a beautiful hill with trees and plants covering every inch of it. If you look straight out it looks over the river and the dam.  Far across the river you can see houses emerging above the trees and boats sitting in the dock. You can see all around the river and the things that surround it. When I arrive at my spot, I step out of my car and just stare at the scenery for awhile and try to take it all in. I like to sit right on the edge of the hill and glance down at the ground below. I can see beautiful flowers and plants planted by each tree.

I usually go to my spot to stop and think about everything going on in my life then and there. I feel like that spot is a part of me and adds memories every time I go there. The spot means a lot to me, and I go there a lot to sort things out. I sometimes bring my friend, but I do not think that this spot means the same or that they even have a place that they go to like mine.  I have gone to this place many times. Although I only found it just last year, I still feel that it is a very big part of me and my life.

Going to this place has completely changed me. There I have and will go to work out problems, to think, and just relax and gaze at the amazing view. I have become more mature and more open to people that I do and don’t know. I have overcome many problems and have begun to look at life a new way. I really feel that this spot has made a great deal of change in my life and I will continue to go there as long as I need it.
