The Rescue

            When the first dog appeared on earth, none of the animals knew what to think of him. A tortoise named this weird animal a dog. Once she named the animal, the dog tried to fight all the animals around. None of the animals liked this dog at all and just walked away except for the tortoise, who laughed and hid inside her shell. The dog then turned to the monkey and began to chase him. There were no nearby trees, [P1] so the monkey had nowhere to go. The dog was gaining on the monkey and the monkey was very scared. Just then the monkey had a great idea. He saw a stream coming up and he thought he would just jump into it and swim as fast as he could to the other side. The dog was just about to bite the him when the monkey jumped into the water. The dog did not see the stream and he fell in. The dog began to scream and yell for help.

            “Help me!’ he cried, “I can’t swim.” The monkey sat on the other side in amazement. What should he do? He could go get help, [P2] but he was scared that the dog might try to bite him again.

            “Please, I can’t swim. I am going to drowned!” he yelled. The monkey ran away from the stream trying to find another animal to help him. He first asked the tortoise.

            “Please come help me. The dog fell into the stream and needs help.” The monkey begged.

            “Never,” she replied. “He scratched the outside of my shell and tried to bite me.”

The monkey ran up the elephant.

            “Please help me, the dog is drowning in a stream.” The monkey said.

            “Why should I? He tried to bite me!” the elephant replied.

            “I promise you, if we help him he wont be mean anymore.”

The elephant gave in and they ran towards the stream just as the dog went under the water.

            “Quick grab[P3]  him!” shouted the monkey. The elephant’s trunk sank below the water and fished around trying to find the dog. The dog was lifted out of the water and set on the ground. The dog coughed and sat up.

            “ Thank you for saving my life. I owe you a favor to both of you, [P4] and I am terribly sorry for the way I acted. I just don’t know who any of you are, [P5] and I am just really afraid.” The dog said.

            “It’s ok. Just don’t let it happen again. That was really scary. Are you ok?” the monkey asked.

            “Yes I am fine.” He replied.

            “C’mon,” said the elephant. “We will go introduce you to all of the animals!”

            From that day on, the dog was everyone’s friend and they lived happily ever after!
